Probiotic bacteria
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most common infection in women of reproductive age. BV is characterized by an overgrowth of predominantly anaerobic and pathogenic organisms in the vagina, leading to a decrease in healthy lactobacilli populations. A reduced number of lactobacilli can lead to an increase in vaginal pH from a healthy acidic pH of less than 4.5 to a less healthy pH that can be as high as 7.0. If symptoms are present, they usually include: a thin, white homogeneous discharge and an unpleasant odor. Lactobacilli are good, desirable bacteria that predominate in the womb and represent protection against unwanted bacteria, viruses and fungi. They are needed in the vaginal mucosa and are an indicator of its health.
